One question I’m asked fairly frequently is “Can creatine help you lose fat?” Creatine monohydrate is one of the most popular and effective fitness supplements on the market today. The main reason athletes and fitness enthusiasts use it is to increase their ability to train hard and gain muscle mass. It has been popular for almost 25 years now, and with good reason; most find it very effective.
That’s great if you’re using it as part of your supplementation routine when training for mass, but can creatine help you if you’re goal is to lose fat? Actually yes, it can help with fat loss, but not because it helps burn fat directly.
Creatine is a combination of amino acids that is actually produced by the body. When combined with Adenosine TriPhosphate (ATP), it is used to help the body produce short term energy. Creatine does indirectly help you to lose fat because it allows you to train harder and experience better results from your resistance training. The added muscle you gain increases your basal metabolic rate, burning more calories on a daily basis. So, it can help you to get lean and stay that way, but not because of any magical fat burning properties it imparts to your body, just through good, old fashioned muscle!

Creatine effects are numerous and can be both good or bad depending on how you use this supplement. The creatine effect is something that many people enjoy yet don’t understand. The beneficial effects of creatine are increased strength, increased stamina, increased satellite cell production, and even a reduction in myostatin, which is the enzyme that reduces muscle growth! These effects are generally without any downside, if used properly.
